Artist Statement

My fascination and involvement with capitalist entrepreneurialism goes all the way back to a sunny afternoon in elementary school when I decided to load up a red wagon with cold drinks and venture into the construction site next to my house to turn a quick profit. From there it was a paper route which led to the discovery of eBay and an idea to sell board games online, which I continue to do today.

Over the past ten years I have paid close attention to the town of Sumas Washington and their uniquely evolving economy. Nowadays, closed are the restaurants, food markets, and gas stations and in their place an increasing number of shipping centres. The strategy of exploiting the town’s proximity to the Canadian border remains the same but the economic landscape has drastically changed. The photographs in this series represent failure, adaptation, and the power of capitalism to alter the landscapes that we experience on a daily basis.
